I never really thought much of the TR-6 until one popped up on my local craigslist. Not this one, a minty green one in decent shape for $8900. But I got to GS'ing and came across this one from

a few years back.
Then a quick trip to YouTube:
Paul Newman had one!
The TR-6 has the muscular look of the Cobra, but without the ridiculous price and oodles more availability. And not so much power.
Anyone looking to buy an Impreza 2.5RS?

My dad knows these cars as the one his friend had that he was working on 10x more than driving, but I still badly want one :p

Even for those who aren't a fan of vintage racing, the face in combination with the body style is very unique. Cars like this are amazing, simply because you don't see them enough. It's great to see the old die hards at shows, but the ones that win my heart are the ones who aren't afraid to abandon the old machine and just keep the stylings ala restomod. A honda s2000 engine would be pretty nice in one of these.

it'd be cheaper to find a miata and make some new body panels for it

haha my dad had a TR4A that barely went up hills and blew o-rings daily. He said it was a pain but misses it greatly.

Lots and lots of rust spots to look for: "boot" lid, forward of the rear fenders, a couple places up front, around lights. Fiddly, fiddly carbs, but mostly they just need to be run frequently to stay loosened up. Don't talk to me about the clutch master/slave replacement, though, that's a dog.
I've got a brit car mag around here somewhere with a TR6-hunter's checklist of problems, things to look for. If you're deadly serious about getting one I might copy it.

I want a well sorted TR-6 and a personal mechanic. I like working on cars, but screw working on old British cars. I want to drive sometimes .

They need fairly consistent tinkering, but one of the best things about old British cars (especially Triumphs) is that they were built specifically with DIY maintenance in mind.
For instance, there's oodles of space in their engine bays to work in, so you rarely have to take other things off to get at the bit you want.

I really really want a TR6 as well. The trouble for me (other than the money of course) is that I'll already have a tuned TR6 engine in my Spitfire. There's little point in having essentially the same car, but heavier and slower.
So, my plan is to get the 2.6l Triumph-designed OHC I6 from a Rover SD1 2600. Stock, these engines were strangled to 136bhp so they didn't compete with the V8 3500, but all the ingredients are there to make quite a hot engine. It's just no-ones done it before.
First off, the block's stronger so you can get to higher power more safely. Second, there's more meat between the bores so you can get a bigger displacement than the Triumph I6 (probably 3.0l for the Triumph/Rover vs 2.7l for the Triumph I6). Thirdly, the SOHC format is more conducive to higher rpm power.
Add onto that either a set of triple Webers or some modern fuel injection and I bet you could hit a fully streetable 200-220bhp, which is near the upper limit for Triumph 2.5l engines.
There's tons of space in the TR6 engine bay as well, so the fact that the T/R 6 is a couple of inches taller and longer shouldn't be a problem at all.
If I really want to go crazy, I'd get a custom 24v head made up using the Triumph Sprint I4 16v head as a basis. It'd be really bloody expensive, but I'd have an utterly unique TR6 by the end of it, and one that Triumph may have produced in an alternative universe.
Either way, I'd bolt it into a TR6 with big Group44-style flares and hoon on :)

Easy accessibility would be fantastic after owning a VR-4 and now a GTI, lol.

Yeah, it's an utter revelation coming from a transverse V6 Alfa.

TR-6 for me right now is just a pipe dream. If I sold my DD to get a TR-6 I'd have to drive it in the winter, in Michigan. I'd give it less than 2 Michigan winters
